Original grey cloth, modest soiling, chipped paper spine label. A Very Good copy. 2 small Athenaean Library stamps. 'Athenaean Society' presentation bookplate dated 1832 with the signatures of the presenters. One is C.H. Upton-- Charles Horace Upton (1812-1877) who graduated from Bowdoin in 1834, became a journalist in Fairfax County, Virginia and was later elected to Congress (1861-62), then appointed U.S. Consul in Geneva, Switzerland (1863-77) by President Lincoln. The Upton family were widely respected Boston merchants, their papers residing at Bowdoin College. The other presenter was C.H. Pierce probably related in some fashion to Franklin Pierce, the 14th Prsident who graduated from Bowdoin in 1824 whose papers also reside at the College. First American edition. Uncommon title. 4pp of adverts at front. 16pp of adverts at rear. 288p

" Sir Walter Scott's "Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft" were his contribution to a series of books, published by John Murray, which appeared between the years 1829 and 1847, and formed a collection of eighty volumes known as "Murray's Family Library... and Scott's 'Letters' written and published in 1830 ( to his son-in-law and biographer, J.G. Lockhart) formed one of the earlier books in the collection. ". Original printed brown boards, red spine present printed strip absent , moderate rubbing.
