The Intelligencer. Belleville. 1860. First Edition. According to a paper clipping laid in at the front cover, 'only five Hastings County Directories were published by Bowell at The Intelligencer between 1860 and 1889.' This is probably the only First Edition extant. Bowell (1823-1917) England-born, Orangeman and Mason was the fifth Prime Minister of Canada, and apprenticed the Belleville's 'The Intelligencer', later becoming editor amd owner before becoming a politician. Very Good in embossed brown cloth, gilt spine titles, modest edge wear, unobtrusive cover stain, small spine abrasion. One map of the 'Plan of Belleville '; title page of Plan of the County of Hastings ' 1/3 excised with the 'Plan' absent. Pink & green endpapers.326p
